“Active warming” with the Dormosafe animal warming pad

The metabolism of warm-blooded animals is highly dependent on constant body core temperature. When an animal is placed under anesthesia, the peripheral blood vessels are dilating, centralization decreases, and cold blood from the periphery enters the body core. The temperature of the entire organism is reduced. Consequently, the complex regulatory system of the body is disturbed, enzyme activity decreases and the whole organism cannot work optimally. Complications may arise due to lower metabolism, heart rhythm, and respiratory disorders. To prevent this process, the patient must not only be protected from cooling, but must be actively warmed.
Patients are often inadequately warmed during and after surgery. It is not enough to place a blanket or a rescue blanket over the patient to maintain warmth or to bring a hypothermic patient back to normothermia. The vast majority of patients, especially small ones, placed under anesthesia must be actively warmed. For this purpose there are different options which are compared in the below table.

Technology of the warming systems

The sensor technology specifically developed for the Dormosafe warming system enables safe and precise heat transfer to the animal patient. As a continuously developed high-tech warming system, Dormosafe convinces with highest safety, flexibility, and durability. 

  • Sensor technology

    To achieve optimum heating quality, three sensors are installed in the warming mattress. The sensors measure the accumulation of temperature between the mat and the patient at three different contact points.  As a result, if the patient was positioned incorrectly, the sensors ensure that the heating mat does not get too hot and no burns occur. With the help of this innovative technology, the temperature of the heating mat automatically adjusts to the patient’s needs and the physiological core temperature is easily maintained.

  • Carbon heating mat

    The heating mat installed in the Dormosafe Soft consists of a very robust, yet flexible, honeycomb-shaped carbon fiber layer that was especially developed for heat distribution. The carbon fibers have a very low yet consistently distributed contact temperature but efficiently transfer the required energy to the patient. This makes this technology extremely safe and the animal can be heated effectively and evenly without the risk of burns. The high-density carbon fabric reaches the desired target temperature within minutes and can maintain it for a long period of time.

  • Medical redundance

    The Dormosafe warming mat contains a microcontroller that automatically regulates the heat quality of the system. This small microcontroller replaces all functions of the very heavy, bulky and often annoying control unit. This microcontroller also controls and triggers any safety functions of the warming mat, such as an audible alarm signal and automatic activation of the fail-save function.

  • Foam material

    A foam mat is integrated inside the Dormosafe Soft. This allows the patient to be positioned in the best possible way and prevents the development of bedsores. The soft core of the warming mat adapts perfectly to the patient’s body. This increases the contact surface and improves heat transfer. At the same time, the foam mat isolates the patient from the cold operating table. Due to its high flexibility, the Dormosafe Soft can be folded around the patient or used as a bolster. Its usage is therefore very individually.

  • Extremely robust, waterproof shell

    The extremely robust shell of the Dormosafe warming pad is ideal for work in the ER and on the ward. The foil used is extremely durable. Furthermore, the system is suitable for the usage in wet areas (IPX4) which means that the warming mat can be easily cleaned with soap and water as well as commercially available disinfectants.
